About
The former Civil Governor’s Building, once the Palace of the Dukes of Aveiro, presents a challenge in terms of heritage interpretation, due to the building’s long evolution and the many adaptations made to meet different uses and needs.
Over time, it served as a residence, an infirmary, a logistics centre, the Civil Governor’s headquarters, and the premises of the Public Security Police. As a result, the building was gradually divided, altered, and transformed.
AVENIDA LUÍSA TODI
Situated on Avenida Luísa Todi, overlooking Praça do Bocage, it is one of the city’s landmarks.
The crown of the building
The project is divided into two phases of intervention. The first phase involves the complete replacement of the upper section of the building, where a new room will be created: the John Whitehead Room.
This future space will be dedicated to the 19th-century naturalist who spent time there, observing the estuary, the birds, and the rich woodland and wildlife of the town of Setúbal.
